Dear Moneyless Grace,

You violated a very important rule.  Always have a cushion (no decorating pun intended.)  However, there is a bright note.  Some of the best methods of publicity in Special Interest Video can be those that are the least costly, or for which there is actually no charge.  It will take extra work on your part, but the results can prove very rewarding.  Do the following:

  1. Contact departmental editors of local newspapers.  If interested,  they will give you a mention, or write articles about your video.  Paid ads usually not as successful for selling videos.

  2. Contact local radio and television shows for interview opportunities.

  3. Contact retail shops that have some connection to the subject of your tape,  who may be willing to place you product on their shelves, possibly even on a consignment basis (you are paid when the video is sold.)

  4. Catalogues are always looking for new products and videos are often accepted.

  5. Continue to ask questions.  You will get answers.  You must allot enough time and be willing to work hard to promote your own product.  Marketing a video is an on-going job.  Don't give up!

In closing,  let me say that if you are financially able,  you should be professionally represented by a reputable marketing and publicity company,  that has the knowledge and contacts to speed up you public relations campaign.  The value of such an investment should not be overlooked.  Placement in the appropriate areas is of paramount importance and you may be surprised to learn that, in most cases,  the cost of professional representation is much less than you thought,  and your video will receive the most worthwhile exposure.  Good luck, Grace.  If I can be of any further help,  please let me hear from you again.
